Gold for NZ in the Mens Team Sprint!

25 July, 2014

Big Congratulations to Ethan Mitchell on his gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow! Gold for NZ in the Men’s Team Sprint, and a new Commonwealth Games record.

The team of Ethan Mitchell, Sam Webster and Eddie Dawkins flew around the 250m track in a Games record time of 43.181 seconds, outdoing the record they had set a couple of hours earlier in qualifying. They always had their noses in front of gallant England, who recorded a time of 43.706s.

The team were already world champions after their victory in Cali, Colombia earlier this year. They were the favourites to win, so they’ve definitely justified that tag.

The bronze medal went to Australia, who comfortably saw off Canada in the third-fourth ride-off.

Their races were completely without hiccups, just top quality team riding. They were riding in the order that clearly works, Mitchell out first, Webster hammering through the middle stage with Dawkins charging hard to complete the job. They set two personal bests as well as two Commonwealth records at sea level, so very solid riding by all three of them.
