Simon Evans was robbed of a probably victory at the BNT V8 SuperTourers over Anzac weekend when he was hit by Ant Pederson, took third place in the final race but managed to finish second in the championship! Well done Simon.

This is the one place at the show where you can simultaneously learn about trends in kitchen and interior design, appliance technology and cooking. The Smeg stand will feature 250 appliances, including the new Fiat 500 Bambina cooler, cooking demonstrations hosted by celebrity chef Paul Jobin, and a range of designer seminars. The stand will also feature the Working Space in the Space Module, which will display the latest home technology and design trends.
Lounge areas with seating will ensure you can rest weary legs and ponder your experience on the Smeg stand. The Rekindle chairs and tables in this area come from Christchurch where materials are being recycled, as the city remembers and rebuilds following the earthquake of 2011. The seating area in the Cooking Theatre is interspersed with retro chairs from American Retro Furniture to match the Smeg 50s style fridges.
THE SPACE MODULE
The trend towards flexible, multipurpose spaces that reflect our modern lifestyle has helped determine the design of this year’s Space Module – the large enclosed room on the Smeg stand. More than a dozen companies have collaborated to bring you the latest design, product, furniture and technology trends for the home in an exhibition titled “The Working Space”. On entering the Space Module you begin the journey of learning more about design and space trends. This is an exciting, innovative feature and a show highlight not to be missed.
Mouthwatering cooking demonstrations aren’t limited to television shows. At the Auckland Home Show you can engage all your senses at the Smeg Cooking Theatre on the Smeg stand, where expert chefs will show you how to cook like a professional with minimal effort.
The kitchen, designed and built by Innovative Kitchens in conjunction with Blum, Laminex, Caesarstone and Melteca, will feature an array of delicious recipes, with the food brought to you courtesy of New World.
Leading the Cooking Theatre team is celebrity chef Paul Jobin, former executive chef at The Lodge at Kauri Cliffs, a Relais & Chateaux property near Matauri Bay. Paul has won numerous culinary competitions and food awards, exhibited throughout New Zealand and made guest appearances on various television programmes. Paul currently works as a freelance chef and demonstrator and tutors part time at the Culinary Institute of NZ.
Each day at the Smeg Cooking Theatre, Paul will be presenting delicious international treats you can prepare yourself. The mornings are given over to Japanese Fusion at 11.30am, with Paul preparing roasted fish with “sea dust”, scallops, miso eggplant and Japanese guacamole. At 3.30pm Paul will prepare a Taste of Morocco – a spiced beef dish with labne, melon, walnut and harissa. And finally at 5.30pm Paul presents Bangkok Pudding, a mouthwatering dessert featuring coconut jelly, yoghurt foam and roasted strawberries.
Each day the Smeg Cooking Theatre will also feature a guest chef. On the Wednesday it will be Neil Brazier of The Sugar Club, who is a two-time winner of the Matariki People’s Choice Award. Neil, who prefers the title “foodologist”, has a quirky outlook and a very inventive, but approachable menu. He has travelled extensively in the UK, America and Asia, working in various Michelin Star-rated restaurants and elite country house hotels, and has worked as an executive chef for some of New Zealand’s finest eateries, including the Pear Tree Restaurant in Kerikeri.
Neil will be followed on Thursday by Andrew Fletcher, who has been executive chef for Dawsons Catering for the past two years. Andrew trained at AUT and joined the Carlton Hotel at the young age of 17. He travelled to London and worked in the kitchens of several fine dining establishments and hotels. Back in Auckland, he worked with Michael James and Euro, returning to Europe to work as a private chef in Gstaad Switzerland. He has since worked as a consultant chef and opened cafés and bars around Auckland. Prior to working at Dawsons, he spend three years at The Westin in Auckland.
On Friday, the guest chef will be Mark Harman, executive chef of Salt restaurant at Castor Bay, North Shore. Mark is an award-winning chef, whose cuisine has received local and international recognition as he pushes the boundaries of competitive cooking. His impressive list of accolades include the New Zealand Beef & Lamb Hallmark of Excellence Award, three Wellington Culinary Fare medals, including two gold medals for best overall dishes and a gold medal for National Culinary Fare. Mark has been in the industry for 18 years, working in fine dining establishments, including Sky City Dine restaurant, Huka Lodge, Bellota and the luxury Amanyara Hotel in the Caribbean. In April 2012, he launched his own signature range of epicurean ready-made soups and pestos under the SEASONS™ Gourmet brand – a move inspired by a desire to bring restaurant-quality food to Kiwi homes.
On Saturday, New Zealand Chef of the Year David Schofield of The Grand will be taking the stand at the Smeg Cooking Theatre. David started his career in the late ’80s in Wellington. He has worked overseas, including time in restaurants in London and the south of France, and represented New Zealand in several international culinary competitions, winning gold and silver medals and setting records that still stand today. David has frequently worked for Michelin-rated chefs in Michelin properties. He describes his style as honest and straightforward, with seasonal produce taking centre stage. David continues to win awards – he won New Zealand Chef of the Year in 2011 and 2012.
David will be followed on Sunday by Jean Christophe Varnier, head chef at Orbit Restaurant, Sky City Auckland. Jean Christophe has more than 25 years experience as a chef, including 12 years owning and running the St Tropez restaurant in Parnell. Jean Christophe has worked in London and France, spending time in Michelin Star restaurants, including the 3-Star L’Auberge de L’Ill He has also spent two years with Radisson Seven Seas managing the Paul Gauguin Michelin 2-Star restaurant and worked with Dominique Parat and the GPK Chain.
There will also be a Kids Can Cook competition running concurrently, with the final to be judged on the Sunday. Talented young chefs between 9 and 15 will cook their favourite healthy food recipe at the Smeg Cooking Theatre with celebrity chef Paul Jobin lending a hand. New World’s education partner Food for Thought has helped to promote this event to encourage kids to choose healthier food options.
The Smeg Cooking Theatre features the latest Smeg appliances, Blum drawers, pantry system and bin solutions, Caesarstone benchtops and Melteca cabinetry. It was designed and manufactured by John van Doormal of Innovative Kitchens.

At the Smeg cooking theatre on the Smeg stand at the Auckland Home Show, there will be regular seminars brought to you by Kitchen Things. Selected designers and consultants will be imparting just the sort of information you need to start planning your own project.
Multi award-winning designer Mal Corboy, who is renowned for his clever use of lighting and colour, will share hints and tips to get you started with your own beautiful kitchen and living space. Over the past 11 years, Mal has accumulated 26 national and international awards and is the first, and only, designer to win Kitchen Designer of the Year in both New Zealand and Australia.
Another award-winning designer, Toni Roberts CKNZ of Kitchen Architecture, will be talking about designing kitchens for flow, function and the wow factor. Toni will show you how to get it right the first time, with an efficient kitchen that facilitates stress-free food preparation, celebrates your home’s style, and provides a gathering place for a family with a busy lifestyle.
Designer Sue Gilbanks of Kitchens By Design will be sharing ideas to help you avoid the pitfalls of poor design with your kitchen, bathroom or laundry project. Kitchens by Design was established in 1989, and the team have a wealth of experience to impart. Sue can show you just how much you stand to gain by working with a professional design consultant.
John van Doormal of Kitchen Expo is another speaker at the design seminars. John has been designing, building and installing kitchens in New Zealand for more than 30 years. He has three dedicated kitchen showrooms – Alno, the world-renowned German collection, Innovative Kitchens, serving the mid-rage custom market, and Kitchens2go, the quality modular budget range. John’s seminar is title How to Buy a Kitchen – 7 Secrets. Here, John will share seven key insights into buying a modern kitchen, demystifying some of the confusing jargon and technology.
Resene colour consultant Sarah Gregory will be talking about creative colour and healthy paint solutions for small living spaces. Sarah has had extensive experience working with a wide range of clients. “The best colour schemes are always those where the colours fit the client’s personality and lifestyle, not the other way around,” she says.
Glen Williamson, joint owner and design director at Marton Lee Furniture will be talking about integrating your kitchen and living area, with beautiful, handcrafted cabinetry and furniture. As a manufacturer and designer, Glen is ideally placed to discuss the manufacturing process and materials, and ways to get the best possible result, with due regard to your budget.
Interior designer Sonya Cotter is another guest speaker. Sonya is the lead designer behind The Working Space – an exciting module on the Smeg stand highlighting inspirational design, product, furniture and technology trends for the home. Sonya specialises in the integration of interior design and lifestyle, and the move towards flexible, multipurpose spaces that work with the way we live today.
Nature moves indoors with a seminar by Cameron Walker of Natural Tree Products who will talk about designing herb and vegetable gardens and ways to bring the garden indoors. Cameron is an expert on creating decorative and functional vertical gardens with the 100% recycled Woolly Pocket system.
Blum hardware is also a focus of attention, with a seminar by Joseph Eggels, North Island sales manager for Blum NZ and Nicola Chan, Dynamic Space consultant for Blum. If you haven’t see recent advances in international hardware technology, be prepared to be impressed – Joseph and Nicola can show you a wealth of highly functional and ergonomic hardware solutions from Blum that will transform your kitchen.
Coffee also takes to the stand, with a fascinating seminar by Beppe Carrozzino, director of Espresso Experience, the exclusive distributor of Lavazza Coffee in New Zealand. Beppe’s seminar is titled “The science of coffee – understanding our daily fix!” Coffee is so much a part of our lives, this makes for a fascinating seminar – you can find out all about the innovative process that always guarantees the perfect cup.
The Colour Space is a new initiative on the stand this year. This is an area where you can sit and talk one-on-one with designers and consultants and be inspired by the possibilities for your own project. Products and services on show will include Resene colours, Melteca and Formica laminates and Warwick fabrics. Interior designer Sonya Cotter will also be on hand to talk over possibilities for your own project. Colours and fabrics will feature four key themes, which can be mixed and matched to make a strong design statement.
There are always fun things for children at the Auckland Home Show. But this year the Smeg and Baumatic stand goes one step further with the Kids Zone, which is directly opposite the entrance to the Space Module.
The Kids Zone is an ideal way to keep your children occupied while you take time to explore all the fun things for grownups. The zone is a triangular-shaped space specially decorated to appeal to children. One area of the wall is striped with vibrant, high-gloss Formica AR Plus laminates – this is a very practical, hardwearing surface that is highly resistant to scuffs.
There is a TV playing DVDs, and children can lounge on bean bags made from colourful Warwick Fabrics textiles.
Another area of the wall in the Kids Zone will feature three colourful beach hut designs. The blue hut will be painted in Resene Blackboard paint; the green hut will feature Resene Magnetic Magic paint; and the orange hut will be painted in Resene Write-on wall paint. Children will be able to play with these surfaces and adults can see just how each paint type works.
Designer Sonya Cotter says it’s a very clean-lined design. “We are happy to let the children provide the chaos.”
