Twenty-five years in business is always worth celebrating, and here at Smeg we have enjoyed taking time out to do just that. We are proud to be a leading appliance brand in New Zealand celebrating 25 years of business. The celebration of Smeg’s silver anniversary in New Zealand coincided with the opening of the new flagship Kitchen Things store in the Apex Megacentre, Sylvia Park. We have had wonderful feedback from those who attended the event and enjoyed meeting our key suppliers, including our representatives from Smeg. The celebration was a party for the whole family, as four generations of the family-run company gathered together. Kerry Harvey traced the company’s origins back to the days of The Microwave Shop and The Hood Centre, before introducing Executive Chairman Mark Jones, who works alongside his daughter, in her new position of Managing Director, Rachel Louie. Check out some of the images of the evening below, and click here for the Chilli Chocolate Brownie recipe that was presented on the night.

SMEG WINS “GOOD DESIGN 2010” AWARD
The Chicago Athenaeum acknowledges Newson for Smeg oven and hob
The Smeg oven and hob designed by Marc Newson are now officially listed amongst the very best of international design. The collaboration with Newson was sought by the Italian company who were determined to develop a product line with one of the most talented designers in the world of influential contemporary design.
A jury of experts from the Chicago Athenaeum, the Architecture & Design Museum, and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, met in New York to declare the product winners of the prestigious “Good Design 2010” award.
Already in its 60th year, the “Good Design” awards are given out once every 12 months for the most original and innovative designs which are judged on different criteria such as aesthetics, functionality and respect for the environment.
The oven and the hob, selected for the award out of hundreds of designs from all over the world, were developed by Smeg as objects that would revolutionize the traditional concept of the domestic appliance. Created as true works of art, both products express the excellence of “Made in Italy” that combines art and industrial design in objects of everyday use.
These innovative appliances are characterised by distinctive colours and soft lines and have a strong aesthetic impact, they are also both intuitive and functional. These features enabled the oven to win the Wallpaper “Design Awards” in 2009, a prize assigned by the respected magazine with the same name.
Together with other winning designs, the Smeg oven and hob will be exhibited at the Chicago Athenaeum in June 2011 as part of the Good Design Show.

THE NEW SMEG DISHWASHERS
With sleek, clean lines and white, silver, stainless steel or integrated finishes, the latest range of Smeg dishwashers – to be released in May – look good in any kitchen, and has the added advantage of improved internal configurations. Homeowners can choose between 14 place settings or the all-new option of 15 international place settings. The new range includes freestanding, built under and fully integrated models, including options with a tall tank. The tall tank offers the benefit of a generous 34.5cm of height in the lower baskets, taking large dinner plates so it is ideal for those who enjoy entertaining.
The new 15-place setting dishwashers offer high load flexibility, better performance and can easily accommodate the dishes from a large dinner party. It also features a third cutlery basket –a pull-out tray at the top of the dishwasher that provides more space for cutlery and long utensils.
Additionally, the lower basket in these models features tilting racks and back supports for cups and glasses and a multizone cutlery basket. These models also have the new half-load FlexiZone, which allows a smaller or cleaner load to be washed, saving energy, water and time, but without being restricted to using only one basket.
A feature on some Smeg dishwashers is the EnerSave option, which provides more energy-efficient washing. EnerSave also ensures the contents dry perfectly every time, using a special automatic device that slowly opens the door a few centimetres at the end of the drying cycle.
A further development for Smeg is Hyclean; it uses higher rinse temperatures and a shorter rinse time to ensure clean and sanitised dishes, and is a feature on selected models.
Smeg’s new range of dishwashers feature improved technology to lower the noise and improve water and energy consumption, making these models a good choice for anyone who prefers an environmentally friendly appliance.

SMEG CEO VITTORIO BERTAZZONI VISITS NEW ZEALAND DISTRIBUTOR OF SMEG, APPLICO LTD.
To coincide with the 25th anniversary of Smeg in New Zealand, the company’s fifth-generation owner, Vittorio Bertazzoni, recently paid a two-day visit to Auckland.

Bertazzoni, the vice president and CEO of Smeg, was accompanied by long-term export director Emer Zavaroni.
The two were welcomed by Applico’s managing director, Mark Jones, to an event on 20 April at the Kitchen Things showroom in Newmarket, Auckland, where they met key retailers, designers and commercial customers.
This was Bertazzoni’s first visit to New Zealand and he says he was so impressed with the country that he plans to return soon.
Zavaroni, a regular visitor to New Zealand, has developed a close relationship with both retailers and with the Smeg team here.
Bertazzoni says his first ever business meeting was with Mark at a trade fair. “I remember it well – it makes me think of New Zealand with great fondness,” he says.
“Since that time, the Smeg ranges have changed considerably and our latest Marc Newson range, with its bold colours and modern design, is a good example of our commitment to development. It’s interesting to note that Marc Newson has just been announced as the designer for the 2012 fireworks over the Sydney Opera House.”
At the Kitchen Things event, Smeg’s new dishwasher range was unveiled.
The top of the line model on display features a new aesthetic, increased capacity with 15 place settings including a pull-out tray above the upper basket and improved water and energy efficiency.
